The Players With The Most Minutes Played In FIFA World Cup History
From Lionel Messi to Diego Maradona, these legends defined entire generations at the FIFA World Cup.
The footballers who made the World Cup their home
Playing at a FIFA World Cup is already a privilege reserved for very few players. But staying at the top across multiple tournaments, appearing in dozens of matches, and becoming a central figure generation after generation is something reserved only for football’s greatest legends.
Throughout World Cup history, iconic names such as Lionel Messi, Lothar Matthäus, Diego Maradona, and Cristiano Ronaldo built everlasting legacies on football’s biggest stage. Some lifted the trophy, others shattered records, but all of them left an unforgettable mark on the tournament.
Lionel Messi dominates the all-time ranking
With 2,315 minutes played, Lionel Messi sits at the top of the list of players with the most minutes in FIFA World Cup history. The Argentine reached the summit after playing 26 matches and finally lifting the trophy at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
In addition to becoming a world champion, Messi also delivered historic numbers with 13 goals and several individual records that further cemented his status as one of the greatest footballers of all time. And perhaps most impressively, he could still extend his lead at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he is expected to once again lead Argentina.
Germany dominates much of the ranking
Germany’s historic influence at the FIFA World Cup is clearly reflected in this ranking. Legendary figures such as Lothar Matthäus, Miroslav Klose, Uwe Seeler, and Philipp Lahm all appear among the players with the most minutes played in tournament history.
Matthäus accumulated 2,047 minutes across 25 matches, while Klose — the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history with 16 goals — totaled 1,792 minutes in 24 appearances. Germany’s consistency at the highest level allowed several of its icons to cement their place among football’s greatest World Cup legends.
Cristiano Ronaldo can still climb the rankings
The list also features two of the most influential names in modern football history: Diego Maradona and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Maradona played 1,909 minutes in 21 World Cup matches for Argentina and delivered immortal performances, especially during the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, where he almost single-handedly guided La Albiceleste to the title.
Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo has accumulated 1,764 minutes and 22 matches with Portugal. However, the Portuguese superstar could still climb several places in this ranking during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a tournament he is expected to approach as Portugal’s captain and biggest star.
