The Jerseys of the FIFA World Cup National Teams
A national team jersey does not only represent a squad, but an entire country. These designs are usually inspired by the culture, history, and symbols that connect with millions of people. And as expected, for this FIFA World Cup, sports brands did everything possible to create unique kits filled with identity and meaning.
These are some of the best jerseys we will see on North American pitches this summer.
Argentina and the Legacy of Its Champions
The reigning world champion had to do something different and meaningful to defend its title. The home jersey features a gradient across the classic sky-blue and white stripes, representing the different shades of blue worn in the three shirts with which Argentina won its World Cups: Mario Kempes in 1978, Diego Maradona in 1986, and Lionel Messi in 2022.
Three championship eras are represented in a single kit.
For the away jersey, Adidas took inspiration from “fileteado porteño,” a traditional Buenos Aires art style recognized by UNESCO. The design blends artistic and cultural details closely tied to Argentine identity, delivering an elegant, unique shirt full of character.
Revolutionary Designs and Cultural Inspiration
Brazil
The home jersey keeps the traditional yellow of the Canarinha, one of the most iconic shirts in football history and the same color worn when Brazil won its five World Cup titles. There was no need to reinvent it too much.
But the real surprise came with the away kit.
The second jersey draws inspiration from the Amazon poison dart frog, which displays intense colors and patterns when preparing to attack. The concept behind the design is to represent the creativity, speed, and danger of the Brazilian national team. In addition, this is a collaboration with Jordan Brand, which enters a World Cup for the first time with a national team.
A revolutionary approach.
Egypt
Puma leaned directly into the country’s history to create one of the most elegant jerseys of the tournament. Both the home and away shirts share the same visual concept: geometric patterns inspired by ancient Egypt, with clear references to pyramids and hieroglyphics.
The home kit comes in red, while the away version is white, maintaining a sober yet symbolic aesthetic. Without a doubt, the perfect uniform for “The Pharaohs.”
France
One of the major favorites for the World Cup also unveiled one of the tournament’s most elegant collections. Nike opted for a modern and sophisticated home jersey, featuring details and patterns that represent modern France: fast, diverse, young, and expressive.
The most eye-catching detail is the copper-colored crest, inspired by the Statue of Liberty, which originally had that tone before oxidizing and turning green over time.
And precisely for that reason, the away jersey is green with copper details. It is a beautiful tribute to the gift France gave to the United States, as well as to sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, creator of one of the most famous monuments on the planet.
Mexico and Its Connection to National Identity
The home jersey of one of the host nations is simply spectacular. But the most interesting part is that this was not the original design.
A few years ago, the first proposal for the Mexican jersey leaked on social media and received heavy criticism. The design was inspired by the Levi’s shirt used during Argentina 1978, considered by many to be the worst World Cup in the history of Mexico.
Adidas then decided to completely change the concept and instead embrace the nostalgia of France 1998, one of the most beloved and memorable Mexican national teams because of its grit, style of play, and the excitement it generated throughout the country.
The main inspiration once again comes from the Aztec calendar, featuring Tonatiuh, the sun god, at the center of the design, accompanied by pre-Hispanic patterns in green tones.
The German brand perfectly understood what Mexican fans wanted: identity, history, and cultural pride. The result is a jersey that connects with the country’s pre-Hispanic roots while also awakening the nostalgia of an entire generation.
Simply spectacular.
The End of a Historic Era
Germany
The FIFA World Cup will also mark the end of a historic era between Germany and Adidas. After the tournament, the German national team will leave the three-stripe brand to begin a new chapter with Nike, ending a partnership that defined entire generations of world football.
And for the farewell, Adidas decided to go all out.
The home jersey is directly inspired by the iconic shirt from Italy 1990, one of the most memorable kits in the history of Die Mannschaft. It maintains the classic white base with black details and brings back the legendary geometric pattern across the chest, modernized with a far more elegant and minimalist finish.
They did not try to reinvent perfection. Instead, they embraced nostalgia, history, and the weight of a jersey that represents championships, legends, and some of the greatest nights in German football history.
Simple, elegant, and spectacular. The perfect farewell to one of the most iconic partnerships between a national team and a sports brand.
