The Hernández brothers head together to the 2026 World Cup: Lucas and Theo represent France from different clubs and with a unique story in international football
Lucas and Theo Hernández will once again wear the France shirt together at the 2026 World Cup. The defensive brothers arrive from different clubs with a story shaped by records, family talent and a bond that has already left its mark on the French national team.
Two brothers, one national team
The French national team will arrive at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a very special family story within its squad. Lucas and Theo Hernández will once again share a call-up with France, cementing themselves as one of the most recognized brother duos in international football. France confirmed both defenders in its World Cup squad for the tournament that will be played across Mexico, the United States and Canada.
Although they defend the same colors internationally, the Hernández brothers have built their careers in very different environments.
Different clubs, same competitive DNA
Lucas Hernández, the older brother, plays for Paris Saint-Germain, where he can perform as either a center-back or left-back thanks to his defensive versatility.
Meanwhile, Theo Hernández plays for Al Hilal, a club where he remains one of the most attack-minded left-backs in world football thanks to his speed and ability to contribute going forward.
Their contrasting styles also make their shared presence unique: Lucas stands out for his defensive solidity and aggressiveness, while Theo usually brings attacking depth, dribbling and goals.
A family story tied to football
Beyond the surname, the Hernández brothers share deep football roots. They are the sons of former footballer Jean-François Hernández, and both developed in Atlético de Madrid’s academy before taking different paths through European football.
One of the family’s most interesting facts is that in 2021, Theo and Lucas became the first brothers to start together for France since 1932, a historic achievement that reflects how uncommon it is to see two brothers share prominence at the highest level of Les Bleus.
The 2026 World Cup and a new chapter for the Hernández brothers
The World Cup also represents a special stage for both players. In Qatar 2022, Theo took on a larger role following Lucas’ injury, highlighting the importance both carry within France’s long-term project.
Now, with both available and once again selected, France will count on the two brothers pursuing the same objective: winning the 2026 World Cup and continuing to expand a family story that already holds a unique place in international football.
