The Coaches With The Most Wins In FIFA World Cup History
From Helmut Schön to Didier Deschamps, these managers built legendary legacies at the FIFA World Cup.
The managers who dominated the World Cup
The FIFA World Cup is usually remembered for legendary players, unforgettable goals, and iconic finals. However, behind every champion there is also a manager capable of building historic teams and handling the immense pressure of football’s biggest tournament.
Throughout World Cup history, several coaches left an unforgettable legacy from the sidelines. Some lifted the trophy, others built football dynasties, but only a select few accumulated enough victories to become the winningest managers in the history of the competition.
Helmut Schön remains the king of the World Cup
The coach with the most victories in FIFA World Cup history is still German manager Helmut Schön. During his legendary spell in charge of West Germany, he managed a total of 25 World Cup matches and collected an incredible 16 victories.
Schön coached the German national team between 1966 and 1978, reaching the final of the 1966 FIFA World Cup in England before eventually winning the tournament at the unforgettable 1974 FIFA World Cup in Germany. His legacy remains one of the greatest in international football history.

Luiz Felipe Scolari made history with Brazil
Second place in the historical ranking belongs to Brazilian manager Luiz Felipe Scolari, who recorded 14 World Cup victories and led Brazil to glory at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea-Japan.
That legendary Brazilian squad featuring stars such as Ronaldo Nazário, Ronaldinho, and Rivaldo became one of the most memorable teams in modern World Cup history. Scolari managed to build a side that looked nearly unstoppable throughout the tournament.
Didier Deschamps is chasing the all-time record
The only active coach truly threatening Helmut Schön’s historic record is Didier Deschamps. The France manager already owns 14 World Cup victories, matching Scolari’s total and moving within touching distance of the all-time record.
Deschamps guided France to the title at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia before reaching another final at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, cementing one of the most successful generations in French football history.
In addition, the French manager will coach his third consecutive World Cup with Les Bleus in 2026, giving him a massive opportunity to break the historic record if France once again makes a deep run in the tournament. With only a few more victories, Deschamps could officially become the winningest coach in World Cup history.
History could change again in 2026
With national teams becoming increasingly competitive and the new 48-team format expanding the tournament, the 2026 FIFA World Cup could rewrite several historic records. And one of the most important storylines will revolve around Didier Deschamps.
If France delivers another strong campaign in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, the French coach could surpass Helmut Schön and write a new chapter in World Cup history from the sidelines.
