Tension in England Ahead of the Semifinal Against Argentina
England’s qualification for the semifinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup produced far more than a hard-fought comeback against Norway. Although the result kept the Three Lions’ title hopes alive, the match also exposed the team’s fatigue and an unexpected tension between Jude Bellingham and head coach Thomas Tuchel.
Rather than the spotlight falling on stars such as Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, or Anthony Gordon, the main protagonist was Jude Bellingham. The Real Madrid midfielder scored a decisive brace to lead England’s comeback and confirm the outstanding form he has shown throughout the tournament.
His first goal came after an excellent combination with Anthony Gordon. Bellingham drove into the penalty area and finished with a low strike to level the score. He later capitalized on a mistake by goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland to score the decisive 2-1 goal and secure England’s place in the semifinals.
With those two goals, the midfielder has now scored six times in the competition and established himself as one of the standout players of the World Cup.
Bellingham Responds to Tuchel
Qualification did not prevent tensions from emerging within the England camp. After the match, Thomas Tuchel expressed his dissatisfaction with his team’s performance despite the victory that placed the Three Lions among the final four.
According to Spanish outlet Sport, the coach’s comments were not well received by some members of the squad, particularly Jude Bellingham, who defended the team’s effort against one of the most competitive sides in the tournament.
Speaking in the mixed zone, the midfielder responded firmly:
“Maybe he does not know what it is like to play under these circumstances against Erling Haaland, Martin Ødegaard, Antonio Nusa, and Alexander Sørloth. They are not an easy opponent.”
The player also called for unity ahead of the semifinal against Argentina.
“We want to maintain a positive atmosphere, and we have to keep it that way.”
England Survives and Awaits Argentina
Beyond the controversy, the match confirmed one of the main strengths of this England generation: its ability to compete under pressure. England once again showed that it knows how to suffer in knockout matches, even when it is unable to impose its best soccer.
The victory over a Norway side led by Haaland and Ødegaard demanded an enormous physical and mental effort. The Scandinavian team pushed England to the limit with its intensity, speed, and attacking power, forcing the Three Lions to come from behind in a highly demanding contest.
The challenge will now be even greater. The reigning world champion, Argentina, awaits in the semifinals, renewing one of the most iconic rivalries in FIFA World Cup history.
From the controversial clash at Mexico 1986, remembered for the “Hand of God” and the “Goal of the Century” scored by Diego Armando Maradona, to their later meetings, every chapter between the two national teams has left a lasting mark on world soccer.
With Jude Bellingham in outstanding form, but questions surrounding the relationship between the dressing room and the coaching staff, England will attempt to move one step closer to a title it has been chasing since 1966.
