Summerville, Kluivert and Timber receive racist abuse on social media after the Netherlands' elimination from the 2026 World Cup
The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) condemned the wave of racist abuse directed at Crysencio Summerville, Justin Kluivert and Quinten Timber following the Netherlands' elimination against Morocco at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The elimination sparked a wave of hate
The Netherlands' penalty shootout defeat to Morocco at the 2026 FIFA World Cup was followed by a regrettable incident off the pitch. Footballers Crysencio Summerville, Justin Kluivert and Quinten Timber became the targets of a wave of racist and discriminatory messages on social media after missing their respective penalties.
The three Dutch internationals received offensive comments, including racist insults and comparisons, primarily on Instagram. As a result, Kluivert and Summerville limited comments on their profiles, while Timber continued to receive discriminatory messages.
The Royal Dutch Football Association condemns the abuse
The KNVB reacted immediately, describing the situation as "terrible" and reiterating that racism and discrimination have no place in football, on the internet, or in society.
The federation confirmed it will file complaints with Meld.Online Discriminatie, an organization that specializes in investigating online discrimination cases. Each post will be reviewed to determine whether it constitutes a criminal offense under Dutch law.
Authorities also responded
Dutch Minister for Sport Mirjam Sterk publicly condemned the abuse, describing the reactions on social media as "deeply regrettable." Authorities also explained that if any of the messages meet the legal threshold for criminal conduct, they may be referred to the police for a formal investigation.

A recurring problem
The incident recalls what happened after the UEFA Euro 2020 final in 2021, when Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka were subjected to racist abuse after missing penalties for England against Italy.
The KNVB reiterated its commitment to fighting racism and emphasized that it continues to support ongoing campaigns against discrimination in football, insisting that the sport must remain a place of inclusion and respect for everyone.
