Spain Without Three Of Its Biggest Stars For Peru Friendly Ahead Of The 2026 World Cup
Luis de la Fuente will be forced to navigate Spain's final warm-up match without several important players as the World Cup approaches.
La Roja will be without several key players
Spain will head into its final warm-up match before the 2026 FIFA World Cup with three notable absences. The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed that Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, and Víctor Muñoz will not travel to Puebla, Mexico, for the friendly against Peru.
Instead, all three players will remain at Spain's training base in Chattanooga, where they will continue their respective recovery programs. According to the federation, the decision was made to prioritize their fitness ahead of the World Cup.
The news comes as Spain prepares for its tournament opener against Cape Verde, making the health of several key players a growing concern.
Concerns surrounding Lamine and Nico
Of the three absentees, the situation surrounding Lamine Yamal has attracted the most attention. The Barcelona star has not played since suffering a hamstring injury in his left leg during a match against Celta Vigo on April 22.
Meanwhile, Nico Williams has not featured since May 10, when the Athletic Club winger was forced off during a match against Valencia after experiencing discomfort in his left hamstring.
Both players are expected to play major roles for Spain at the World Cup, making their recovery one of the team's top priorities over the coming days.
Víctor Muñoz remains sidelined
The third player unavailable for the trip is Víctor Muñoz, who continues to deal with lingering issues in his left calf.
The midfielder originally suffered the injury in April and managed to return late in the LaLiga season, but he is still not fully recovered. Spain's coaching staff has opted to take a cautious approach rather than risk aggravating the problem before the start of the tournament.
With the World Cup just around the corner, ensuring Muñoz returns to full fitness remains a key objective.
The lineup Luis de la Fuente is expected to use
With those three absences confirmed, attention now turns to the lineup that Luis de la Fuente is expected to field against Peru.
The biggest question mark appears to be in goal, where Unai Simón and David Raya continue to compete for the starting position. Elsewhere, Spain is expected to deploy a lineup very similar to the one that will face Cape Verde in its World Cup opener.
That could mean a back line featuring Marcos Llorente, Pau Cubarsí, Eric García, and Marc Cucurella, with Rodri, Fabián Ruiz, and Pedri anchoring the midfield. Up front, Ferran Torres, Dani Olmo, and Mikel Oyarzabal are expected to lead the attack.
The friendly against Peru represents Spain's final opportunity to fine-tune its preparations before beginning its quest at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
