The Spain victory over Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Final became the most-watched soccer broadcast in United States television history, averaging 63 million viewers, according to data released Tuesday by Nielsen and reported by Variety.

The Numbers

The World Cup Final attracted nearly 39 million viewers on FOX, while Telemundo and Peacock, which provided Spanish-language coverage of the tournament, added 23.9 million viewers.

These figures surpassed all previous records set during the tournament and more than doubled the average audience of 25.78 million viewers who watched the 2022 FIFA World Cup Final between Argentina and France across U.S. networks.

Surpassing the U.S. National Team’s Audience Records

Sunday’s audience also became the largest ever recorded in the United States for a soccer match, breaking the previous record held by the controversial United States vs. Belgium Round of 16 match, which had drawn 46 million global viewers just days earlier.

The match was remembered in part for the controversy surrounding the overturned red card decision involving U.S. player Folarin Balogun.

Spain’s national team, known as La Roja, secured the second World Cup title in its history, following its 2010 triumph in South Africa, after defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time thanks to a goal from Valencia-born forward Ferran Torres in the 106th minute.

With the result, Argentina fell just short of adding a fourth World Cup star to its historic international record.
