South African Football Association (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan has confirmed the departure of head coach Hugo Broos following their historic World Cup campaign. 

The decision was announced on Friday, which was the final day of Broos' contract, and the 74-year-old departs five years after taking charge of South Africa. 

Broos was appointed in 2019 and oversaw 60 matches across all competitions, winning 29 of those (D19 L12) and posting a win ratio of 46.2%. 

The Belgian's arrival came after South Africa's failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2021, and he led the team to a third-place finish in the 2023 edition. 

He then helped Bafana Bafana qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 24 years and marked their first appearance in the tournament since 2010, when they were hosts, by overseeing their run to the last 32 in North America. 

South Africa qualified for the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time, becoming the seventh African nation to reach the knockout stages at FIFA's flagship competition.

They finished second in Group A with four points, with their triumph over South Korea in their final group game just their third-ever win in the World Cup and their first against a non-European team, before they were knocked out by co-hosts Canada. 

Broos had previously said his departure from his role as South Africa boss was "irreversible", but he was open to an alternative role within the nation's football federation. 

However, the SAFA has now confirmed Broos' exit and pushed back on reports that he had been offered a one-year contract extension. 

Broos leaves as South Africa's longest-serving head coach in their history.

Though they have yet to announce his successor, Pitso Mosimane is the reported frontrunner. 

Mosimane, who had previously taken charge of Bafana Bafana between 2010 and 2012, has also enjoyed stints with the Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly, winning the CAF Champions League three times during his time at both teams.
