Santos Manager Insists Neymar Is “Getting Stronger” Ahead of the World Cup
Santos coach insists the Brazilian star is improving despite criticism and eyes the 2026 World Cup.
Santos FC head coach Cuca defended Neymar following his underwhelming display in the Copa Sudamericana, stating that the forward is “getting stronger” as he aims for a spot in the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Santos drew 1-1 against San Lorenzo in Buenos Aires, a result that leaves their Group D hopes hanging by a thread. While the team performance raised concerns, much of the post-match criticism was directed at Neymar, who struggled to make his usual impact.
Cuca, however, highlighted positives in his performance: “He improved in the second half, found more space, created chances, and showed intelligence. He attempts passes very few players can see. I see him strong and improving.”
With the World Cup approaching, every performance is being closely monitored, especially with Carlo Ancelotti potentially considering him for Brazil. Despite recording just one shot on target and three key passes, his club coach remains confident in his trajectory.
Cuca also praised the Argentine fans for their respect: “It was great to see the crowd applaud Neymar. That meant a lot to us.”
Santos now turns its focus to a crucial domestic clash against Palmeiras in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, though both Neymar and Gabriel Barbosa (Gabigol) remain doubts due to concerns over artificial turf. With the team sitting near the relegation zone, their absence would be a major setback.
