Real Madrid Confirm Bernardo Silva Signing Ahead of Portugal's World Cup Clash With DR Congo
The 31-year-old midfielder leaves Premier League side Manchester City to bolster José Mourinho’s Real Madrid squad ahead of the new season.
Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva will play for Real Madrid for the next two seasons after reaching an agreement with the Spanish giants. The veteran playmaker arrives at the Santiago Bernabeu as a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Manchester City.
A NEW FACE FOR LOS BLANCOS
Silva, 31, is currently with Portugal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and has signed a deal that will keep him at Real Madrid until June 30, 2028, according to a statement released by the club.
He becomes Real Madrid’s second signing ahead of the new season after the club announced the arrival of Spanish left back Marc Cucurella from Chelsea on a six-year contract earlier this week.
Although several reports linked Silva with Barcelona and Atlético Madrid in recent weeks, the appointment of Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho as Real Madrid head coach accelerated negotiations and ultimately paved the way for the midfielder’s move to the Spanish capital.
A MANCHESTER CITY LEGEND
Silva, who will turn 32 on August 10, leaves Manchester City after nine highly successful seasons. During his time at the club, he made 460 official appearances across all competitions, scoring 76 goals and providing 75 assists.
Under Spanish manager Pep Guardiola, Silva established himself as one of the cornerstones of City’s most successful era. He helped the club win 19 major trophies, including the UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and six Premier League titles.
A DISTINGUISHED CAREER WITH PORTUGAL
Before moving to England, Silva spent three seasons at AS Monaco and one with Benfica, the club where he developed through the youth ranks.
At international level, he has earned 109 caps for Portugal and scored 14 goals, numbers he could add to as Portugal opens its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The tournament marks his third World Cup appearance.
His achievements with the national team include UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025. Silva was also named the tournament’s best player in the 2019 edition.
Portugal won the UEFA European Championship in 2016, but Silva missed the competition due to a muscle injury, an absence he has described as the most difficult moment of his professional career.
More Signings on the Horizon
Following the arrivals of Silva and Cucurella, Real Madrid is expected to confirm two more additions in the coming days: French center back Ibrahima Konate, who would join on a free transfer after leaving Liverpool, and Dutch fullback Denzel Dumfries, who remains under contract with Inter Milan through 2028.
The potential signings of Konate and Dumfries were among the commitments made by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez during his successful election campaign, which concluded with his victory on June 7.
