Pochettino Takes Charge After Belgium’s Win Over the USA in the FIFA World Cup 2026
The Argentine coach acknowledged Belgium's superiority and took responsibility for the 4-1 loss in Seattle, leaving his future with the USMNT in suspense.
The defeat and the coach's analysis
The United States bid farewell to the 2026 World Cup with a 4-1 loss to Belgium in Seattle. Charles De Ketelaere scored two goals, while Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku completed the victory. The only American goal was scored by Malik Tillman, but the reaction was brief. Mauricio Pochettino acknowledged the opponent's superiority: "We were never in the game. The main responsible one is me. Congratulations to Belgium, they were better." The statistics reflected the difference: only seven shots, two on target, and an xG of 0.6 compared to 2.0 for the Europeans.
Uncertain future and deep self-criticism
The Argentine coach insisted that the elimination should serve as a learning experience: "It's a process, we need to understand why we didn't play like we did in the rest of the tournament. Maybe the explanation is simple: it wasn't our day, neither collectively nor individually." His contract expires this summer and, although the federation offered him an extension, there is still no agreement. "In the coming weeks, we will talk. Now it's time to rest and reflect. I am happy with the relationship we built, but it is not the time to talk about my future," he said.
Balogun and the external noise
Folarin Balogun, the top American scorer in the tournament with three goals, was a starter after the suspension of his sanction by FIFA. However, he was unable to impose himself despite his three attempts on goal. Tyler Adams defended his teammate: "I don't think the external noise affected us. Balogun tried to be a presence, but he didn't have too many opportunities." The USMNT was eliminated in the round of 16 again, as in 2010, 2014, 2022, and now in 2026, leaving more questions than answers about the future of this generation and Pochettino's role.
