Patrick Vieira Emerges as Favorite to Become Senegal's New Head Coach
The Senegalese Football Federation is already searching for a replacement for Pape Thiaw, with Patrick Vieira emerging as the leading candidate. The former France midfielder, who was born in Dakar, could soon take charge of Senegal and begin a new chapter with the national team.
Senegal could soon usher in a new era. Following the dismissal of Pape Thiaw after the team's FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 exit, multiple reports indicate that Patrick Vieira has become the frontrunner to take over the Lions of Teranga.
The coaching change follows a disappointing World Cup campaign. Although Senegal entered the tournament with high expectations, its late defeat to Belgium brought Thiaw's tenure to an end, despite having guided the national team to the Africa Cup of Nations title only months earlier.
A World Cup Winner With Senegalese Roots
According to reports from France, Patrick Vieira is the top candidate being considered by the Senegalese Football Federation. Born in Dakar, Vieira chose to represent France internationally, becoming a World Cup champion in 1998 and winning UEFA EURO 2000.
At club level, he built an outstanding career with Arsenal, Juventus, Inter Milan, Manchester City, AC Milan, and AS Cannes, establishing himself as one of the finest midfielders of his generation.
Since moving into coaching, Vieira has managed New York City FC, Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg, and Genoa, gaining valuable experience across both European football and Major League Soccer.
The Challenge of Rebuilding Senegal
Whoever takes over will inherit a team looking for stability after a difficult period. Reports suggested that several senior players had grown frustrated with the previous coaching staff, with Pape Gueye among those who publicly questioned decisions made during Pape Thiaw's tenure.
The immediate objective will be to restore unity within the squad while preparing Senegal for its upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, which resumes in September.
