Paraguay Misses Out on Direct Qualification and Must Wait to Learn Its Fate at the 2026 FIFA World Cup
The Paraguay national team was held to a scoreless draw by Australia in the final Group D match, missing the chance to secure a direct place in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Paraguay national team was unable to get the result it needed, settling for a 0-0 draw against Australia in a match that left a bitter taste for Gustavo Alfaro's side. With the result, La Albirroja finished third in Group D with four points and must now wait for the conclusion of the group stage to find out whether it has done enough to advance as one of the best third-placed teams.
Meanwhile, Australia accomplished exactly what it needed. The draw was enough for Tony Popovic's squad to secure second place in the group behind the United States, booking a direct spot in the knockout stage.
Australia Controlled the Match and Frustrated Paraguay
From the opening whistle, Australia controlled possession and dictated the tempo of the game. Although clear-cut chances were limited for much of the first half, the Socceroos created the more dangerous opportunities, forcing goalkeeper Orlando Gill into a pair of key saves to keep the match level.

As time ran out, Paraguay was forced to push forward in search of a winner. Gustavo Alfaro made attacking substitutions to add more depth to his side, which improved after halftime but lacked the finishing touch needed to break the deadlock.
Enciso Could Not Make the Difference
One of the players expected to lead Paraguay's attack was Julio Enciso, but the talented forward endured a quiet performance and struggled to create meaningful chances. His best opportunity came late in the match with a pair of efforts that failed to find the back of the net.
The injury to Omar Alderete also complicated the closing stages for La Albirroja, which finished the game relying more on determination than precision.
While Australia celebrates qualification for the Round of 32 alongside the United States, Paraguay must now wait for the remaining group-stage results to determine whether its four-point haul will be enough to keep its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign alive.
