OFFICIAL! FIFA: “The 2026 World Cup Will Not Be Canceled in Mexico”
After days of uncertainty and online speculation, FIFA's president presented the official stance about the security situation in Mexico.
FIFA Remains Calm
FIFA president Gianni Infantino stated that the organization maintains full confidence in Mexico as one of the hosts of the 2026 World Cup, following recent unrest reported in parts of the country.
Speaking in Barranquilla during an event with the Colombian Football Federation, Infantino made it clear that he is “very calm” about Mexico’s role in the tournament. He emphasized that preparations remain on track and described the upcoming event as set to be “spectacular.”
Confidence in Organization and Security
FIFA reiterated that all necessary guarantees are in place for the tournament. Mexico will co-host the competition alongside the United States and Canada from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
Infantino also highlighted the historic importance of Estadio Azteca, calling it the “cathedral of football” and noting it will become the first stadium to host three World Cup opening matches. He further praised the unprecedented demand for tickets across the three host nations.
Support From Mexican Authorities
Mexican officials also publicly reaffirmed that security measures are guaranteed. President Claudia Sheinbaum, along with governors Pablo Lemus of Jalisco and Samuel García of Nuevo León, stressed that conditions are in place for all scheduled events.
Guadalajara and Monterrey will not only host World Cup matches but will also stage the international playoff games between March 26 and 31, which will determine the final teams qualifying for the tournament.
Preparations Continue as Scheduled
Mexico will feature three host cities: Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. The capital will host five matches, while Guadalajara and Monterrey will each stage four games. In addition, friendly matches involving the Mexico national team on home soil have been confirmed, along with the previously scheduled international playoff fixtures.
With institutional backing from FIFA and national authorities, preparations for the 2026 World Cup in Mexico continue according to the established timeline.
