Norway Clears Up Illness Concerns Ahead of England World Cup Showdown
Norway has dismissed rumors of a virus spreading through its squad before Saturday's World Cup quarterfinal against England, but both teams could face another opponent in Miami: the weather.
Norway shuts down illness rumors before quarterfinal
With a place in the World Cup semifinals on the line, Norway wanted to eliminate any doubts before facing England. Reports suggesting a virus had spread through the squad following its victory over Brazil were quickly denied by team doctor Ola Sand.
According to Sand, every player is available and the group has successfully managed the minor health issues that surfaced during the tournament.
"All the players are healthy now," the team doctor said, adding that it would be unusual for a delegation of more than 50 people traveling together for several weeks not to experience isolated illnesses.
His comments sought to calm speculation that Norway could be entering one of its biggest matches of the tournament with key players compromised.
Travel, air conditioning and long flights took their toll
The rumors gained traction after head coach Ståle Solbakken acknowledged that a few players had experienced flu-like symptoms during the tournament.
Among those affected were Jørgen Strand Larsen, who dealt with a fever, and Marcus Pedersen, who reportedly felt unwell on the morning of Norway's Round of 16 victory over Brazil.
Solbakken attributed those issues to the demanding travel schedule across the United States, pointing to constant flights, air conditioning, hotel changes and the physical demands of a month-long tournament rather than an outbreak inside the camp.
With Norway now confirming a clean bill of health, attention shifts fully back to the challenge awaiting in Miami.
Miami weather could become a deciding factor
While the illness concerns appear to be over, another obstacle could influence Saturday's quarterfinal.
Forecasts call for temperatures approaching 35°C (95°F) in Miami, with isolated thunderstorms also expected around kickoff.
The weather has already affected matches during the tournament. England previously saw its meeting with Mexico delayed because of lightning, while high temperatures have forced teams to carefully manage player workloads throughout the competition.
Conditions like these could become especially significant in the closing stages if the match remains level.
England and Norway prepare for a battle on every front
For Thomas Tuchel, managing his squad's fitness remains a priority as England continues its push toward another World Cup semifinal.
The Three Lions have also been monitoring the fitness of several players, making squad depth increasingly important as the tournament enters its decisive phase.
Norway, meanwhile, arrives with confidence after knocking off Brazil and will once again look to the firepower of Erling Haaland to challenge one of the tournament favorites.
If the weather cooperates, fans could be treated to one of the standout matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. If it doesn't, surviving the Miami conditions may prove just as important as surviving the opponent.
