Morocco Hit by Major Injury Concern as Abde Goes Down Ahead of the 2026 World Cup
One of the Atlas Lions' biggest stars left the field in visible pain during Morocco's final preparations for the World Cup.
The worst possible scenario before the opener
The Morocco national team received the news it feared most just days before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. During a friendly against Norway, one of the team's key attacking players, Ez Abde, was forced off the field after appearing to injure his right knee.
The Atlas Lions are set to open their World Cup campaign against Brazil on June 14, making any injury concern at this stage of preparation particularly alarming. While the full extent of the problem remains unknown, the images coming from the match did little to ease concerns.
An injury that has Morocco worried
The incident occurred during a defensive set piece and appeared to be entirely accidental. As Morocco defended a corner kick, teammate Chadi Riad landed awkwardly on Abde, causing a collision that affected the winger's right knee.
After receiving treatment on the sideline, the Real Betis star attempted to continue playing. However, moments later he went back down to the turf, visibly frustrated and in pain, holding his head as medical staff rushed back onto the field.
The reaction immediately raised concerns among Morocco's coaching staff and supporters, especially given how influential Abde had been before the injury.
Morocco's brightest player on the day
Before leaving the match, the former Barcelona winger had been one of Morocco's standout performers.
He provided the assist for Brahim Díaz's goal with an excellent run through midfield and nearly found the net himself shortly afterward following a clever exchange with the Real Madrid playmaker.
His departure forced head coach Mohamed Ouahbi to rethink his plans, with Soufiane Rahimi entering the match as Morocco tried to maintain control of the game.
Mazraoui adds to Morocco's concerns
Abde was not the only player to leave the pitch with an injury concern.
Earlier in the match, Manchester United full-back Noussair Mazraoui was substituted after experiencing physical discomfort. He was replaced by Belammari, creating further anxiety within the Moroccan camp.
Following the match, head coach Mohamed Ouahbi openly admitted his concern regarding both players.
"What worries me right now are the injuries to Noussair Mazraoui and Abde Ezzalzouli," the coach said after the final whistle.
Morocco now awaits the results of further medical examinations, hoping the injuries are not as serious as they initially appeared. Losing two important players just days before the World Cup would be a significant setback for a team hoping to make another deep run on football's biggest stage.
