Mohamed Salah Makes World Cup History, Breaks Down in Tears
The Pharaohs will face Lionel Messi and Argentina in their first-ever World Cup knockout match.
Egypt captain and European soccer star Mohamed Salah couldn't hold back his tears on Friday after leading his country to the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time in its history.
WHAT THE LIVERPOOL STAR SAID
"It's history. I told the guys this was the match of a lifetime and that we had to enjoy every moment. I'm so happy to have made history with this team," an emotional Salah said after the final whistle.
The Egyptian captain also explained his audacious Panenka penalty during the shootout against Australia, where Egypt secured a 4-2 victory after the match ended 1-1 in regulation at Dallas Stadium.
"If anyone was going to do it, it had to be me. I have more experience than the others, and I wanted to give them confidence. I decided at the very last second. I had to do it."
HIS WISH CAME TRUE
Later, in the mixed zone, Salah was asked which of the legendary players competing in what is expected to be their final World Cup he would most like to face.
Without hesitation, his answer was Lionel Messi.
His wish quickly became reality.
Messi and Argentina survived a major scare, defeating Cape Verde 3-2 after extra time in Miami to book their place in the Round of 16.
Now, Salah's Egypt and Messi's Argentina are set for one of the most anticipated knockout matches of the tournament when they meet on Tuesday, July 7, at Atlanta Stadium.
