Messi’s Special Gift After Switzerland Win Goes To Italian Legend
Following Argentina's victory over Switzerland in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals, Lionel Messi gave his match-worn jersey to Italian legend Roberto Baggio in a heartfelt gesture celebrating their long-standing friendship.
Lionel Messi once again made headlines away from the pitch. After Argentina's 3-1 victory over Switzerland in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals, the Argentine captain presented his match-worn jersey to Italian football icon Roberto Baggio.
Baggio later shared the emotional moment on social media, posting a photo alongside Messi while holding the Argentina shirt.
"Thank you, Leo, for your precious gift and your affection. I love you very much, my friend," wrote the 1993 Ballon d'Or winner, expressing his gratitude for the memorable gesture.
The bond between Messi and Baggio dates back to 2010, when they met in Barcelona through Pep Guardiola. Guardiola had previously played alongside Baggio at Brescia, helping establish the connection that eventually grew into a lasting friendship between the two football legends.
Baggio attended the quarterfinal in Kansas City and visited Argentina's dressing room after the match, where Messi personally handed him the jersey he had worn during the victory.
On the field, Argentina secured its place in the World Cup semifinals thanks to goals from Alexis Mac Allister, Julián Álvarez, and Lautaro Martínez. The reigning world champions will now face England for a place in the final, while Messi continues to leave a remarkable legacy through both his performances and his gestures of sportsmanship.
