Messi’s Recovery Progress Ahead of the 2026 World Cup
The Albiceleste captain is following a special recovery plan and is expected to be fully fit for the opening match against Algeria.
Argentina’s preparations as the reigning world champions began in Kansas City with an expected absence from collective training: Lionel Messi worked separately from the group as he continues to recover from inflammation in his left hamstring.
The issue dates back to May 24 during an Inter Miami CF match and is believed to be linked to accumulated muscle fatigue. As a result, the coaching staff led by Lionel Scaloni has opted for a gradual recovery process involving rest, individualized work, and a progressive increase in training loads.
The main objective is to have Messi in the best possible condition for Argentina’s World Cup opener against Algeria on June 16. Everything suggests that the Argentine captain will miss Saturday’s friendly against Honduras, while his availability for the match against Iceland three days later will depend on how his recovery progresses.
Messi is not the only concern for Argentina’s medical staff. Emiliano Martínez is also training separately as he recovers from a fracture in the ring finger of his right hand. The goalkeeper is expected to miss the warm-up friendlies, although there is optimism that he will be available for the start of the tournament.
In addition, several players continue to follow specific recovery programs, including Julián Álvarez, Cristian Romero, Leandro Paredes, Gonzalo Montiel, Nahuel Molina, Nico González, Nico Paz, and Thiago Almada.
With just two weeks remaining before their World Cup debut, Argentina is prioritizing the recovery of its key players. The encouraging news for Albiceleste supporters is that, despite his physical setback, the coaching staff remains confident that Messi will be ready to lead the defense of Argentina’s world title when the tournament begins.
