Messi's Curious Reunion During the Match Against Iceland
World champions Argentina wrapped up their preparations with a convincing 3-0 victory over Iceland in Auburn. Goals from Valentín Barco, Lionel Messi, and Thiago Almada helped the team coached by Lionel Scaloni extend its winning streak to seven consecutive matches. However, beyond the result, the game produced a unique story involving the Argentine captain.
A Greeting That Caught Messi by Surprise
At the end of the match, during the traditional exchange between players, Iceland's No. 22 approached Messi and told him: “Hi, you played with my father.” The remark caught the Argentine superstar off guard, as he initially did not recognize the player.
The player was Daniel Gudjohnsen, son of Eidur Gudjohnsen, one of Messi's former teammates at Barcelona. The two shared a locker room during one of the most successful periods in the club's history, when Messi was beginning to establish himself as the brightest talent to emerge from La Masia, while Gudjohnsen was an important member of the Blaugrana squad.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Messi admitted that the moment surprised him and explained that he had very few memories of Daniel as a child.
“I don't remember him very well because he was very young, but I do remember seeing him once when his father brought him to one of the training sessions at Barcelona,” the Argentine captain said.
From Spain's Youth Academies to Swedish Football
Daniel Gudjohnsen is a 20-year-old forward who currently plays for Malmö FF in Sweden, although much of his football development took place in Spain. During his childhood, he spent time in the youth systems of both Barcelona and Real Madrid before beginning a new chapter in Swedish football. He also speaks fluent Spanish, which made his conversation with Messi flow naturally.
Born in London in 2006 during his father's final season with Chelsea, Daniel moved to Barcelona with his family shortly afterward. There, he witnessed the early years of Messi's rise to stardom. As the Argentine legend recalled, their paths crossed when Daniel was just a small child. Years later, fate brought them together once again, but under very different circumstances—not as a child accompanying his father, but as an opponent facing one of the greatest footballers in history.
