Mbappé Condemns Racist Abuse as France Takes Legal Action
Kylian Mbappé responded forcefully after racist remarks made by Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla. The French Football Federation has announced legal action and reaffirmed its commitment to fighting discrimination.
France's qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals was overshadowed by controversy after captain Kylian Mbappé became the target of racist remarks made by Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla following France's 1-0 victory over Paraguay.
The comments sparked widespread outrage due to their offensive and discriminatory nature. In addition to directing racist insults at Mbappé, the senator also suggested that Paraguay's players should have physically confronted the French star after the match.
Mbappé chose not to remain silent. Through his social media accounts, he delivered a strong response, making it clear that Amarilla does not represent the Paraguayan people, whom he praised for their passion and dignity throughout the tournament. He described the senator as "unworthy of her office" and firmly rejected any attempt to spread hatred and racism.
The French Football Federation quickly issued an official statement backing its captain. The FFF described the senator's remarks as "abhorrent," "criminal," and "unacceptable," while confirming that it will file a legal complaint with prosecutors in pursuit of judicial action.
The federation also reiterated its full support for Mbappé, the French national team, and all victims of racist abuse, emphasizing its determination to continue fighting racism and every form of discrimination in football. The incident has extended beyond the sport itself, highlighting the ongoing global challenge of combating hate speech both on and off the field.
