Luis de la Fuente Provides Update on Lamine Yamal’s Injury Status
Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente confirmed that Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, and Victor Muñoz are progressing well in their recovery and could be available for Spain’s 2026 FIFA World Cup opener, although a starting role remains uncertain.
The countdown to Spain’s debut at the 2026 FIFA World Cup continues, and one of the biggest concerns surrounding the squad has been the fitness of several key players. Among them is Lamine Yamal, who has been closely monitored in recent days after suffering a muscle injury that kept him out of recent preparation matches.
Fortunately for the Spanish camp, the latest news appears encouraging. Head coach Luis de la Fuente provided a positive update on the young star’s recovery and suggested he could be available when the tournament begins.
Positive News for Spain Ahead of the World Cup
Speaking from Puebla, where Spain is preparing for its final friendly before the World Cup, De la Fuente explained that Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, and Victor Muñoz are all recovering according to schedule.
The trio remained at the team’s training base in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where they continued individualized rehabilitation programs designed to help them regain full fitness before the start of the tournament.
According to the Spanish manager, all three players have responded well to treatment, and barring any setbacks over the coming days, they should be available for selection in Spain’s opening World Cup match against Cape Verde on June 15.
Starting Roles Remain Uncertain
Despite the encouraging progress, De la Fuente admitted there is still uncertainty regarding whether Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams will be ready to start from the opening whistle.
The coach emphasized the difference between being medically cleared to play and being physically prepared to handle the demands of a full match at the highest level.
As a result, the coaching staff will continue evaluating both players before making a final decision. Protecting their long-term availability throughout the tournament remains the priority.
Meanwhile, Spain continues making final preparations ahead of the World Cup. Following the friendly against Peru, the squad will shift its full attention to the opening match against Cape Verde, hoping to have all key players available.
