Luis de la Fuente Defends Spain’s Controversial Squad For The 2026 World Cup
Spain’s manager responded to criticism surrounding his squad selection and explained several of the most debated decisions ahead of the World Cup.
Spain’s manager responded to criticism after announcing the squad
After officially revealing Spain’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Luis de la Fuente publicly defended several of the decisions that generated the most controversy around the national team.
The Spanish coach specifically explained the inclusions of Eric García and Marc Pubill, discussed Gavi’s return, praised the level shown by David Raya, and also addressed the physical condition of Lamine Yamal and Pedri.
“They have delivered great performances this season,” De la Fuente said about Eric García and Pubill, making it clear that both selections were based purely on footballing merit.
Eric García and Pubill became two of the most debated decisions
The inclusion of Eric García and Marc Pubill surprised part of the Spanish fanbase, especially considering several major names were ultimately left out of the final squad.
However, De la Fuente showed complete confidence in both players. Speaking about Eric García, the coach highlighted not only his footballing qualities but also the positive impact he has inside the locker room. “I know the type of person he is and he will be one more member of this group,” he explained.
Regarding Pubill, the Spanish manager reminded reporters that the Federation already knew the Atlético defender very well from his development through Spain’s youth teams alongside Santi Denia. He also praised the player’s versatility and ability to perform in multiple positions.
Gavi emotionally moved the entire group
One of the most emotional moments of the press conference came when Luis de la Fuente discussed Gavi, who returns to a major tournament squad after suffering a serious injury while playing for Spain.
“I went through a very difficult time with Gavi’s injury. He is the toy of the entire team,” the coach admitted, showing the enormous affection that exists inside the Spanish locker room toward the Barcelona midfielder.
The manager also reacted to the viral video posted by Lamine Yamal, where Gavi can be seen crying after learning he had made the World Cup squad. “I’m going to start crying too,” De la Fuente responded emotionally.
Pedri and Lamine bring excitement… but also caution
The Spanish coach also had special words for Pedri, remembering how much Spain suffered after losing him through injury during the last European Championship.
“I’m very happy to have him available,” De la Fuente explained, while also insisting that the Barcelona midfielder still has room to improve and reach an even higher level.
When discussing Lamine Yamal, the manager delivered a much more cautious message due to the muscular issue the Spanish wonderkid is currently recovering from. “We will not accelerate any process,” he stated.
Even so, De la Fuente admitted that many players are willing to take physical risks when it comes to playing in a World Cup. “If players want to take risks, it’s at a World Cup,” he admitted, although he made it clear that the coaching staff will always have the final decision.

Víctor Muñoz emerges as the biggest surprise
Finally, Luis de la Fuente also explained the inclusion of Víctor Muñoz, one of the biggest surprises in Spain’s World Cup squad.
The Spanish coach highlighted the youngster’s pace, energy, and ability to completely change matches coming off the bench.
“He gives us speed, intensity, changes the rhythm of matches, and can even play in midfield,” De la Fuente said, convinced that the attacker could become an important weapon for Spain throughout the tournament.
