Luis de la Fuente confident Lamine Yamal can make Spain’s World Cup opener
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente remains optimistic about Lamine Yamal recovering in time for the team’s World Cup debut.
Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has expressed confidence that Lamine Yamal could be available for the national team’s opening match of the World Cup if his recovery continues as planned.
Speaking ahead of Spain’s friendly against Iraq at Riazor Stadium, De la Fuente confirmed that Lamine will not feature in the warm-up match. Fellow winger Nico Williams and Víctor Muñoz will also remain sidelined as part of a carefully managed fitness program.
Despite the precautionary approach, the Spain coach delivered a positive update on the Barcelona star’s condition. “If everything continues as it has so far, he could be ready for the 15th,” De la Fuente said, referring to Spain’s World Cup opener. However, he emphasized that being fit does not automatically guarantee a starting position.
The coach also addressed the goalkeeping situation. While refusing to reveal the identity of his first-choice goalkeeper, he stated that the decision has already been made and expressed full confidence in the player selected. “I know who the starter will be, and it will be a great goalkeeper,” he said.
Questions were also raised about the condition of Riazor Stadium following recent incidents involving fans on the pitch. De la Fuente reassured supporters, explaining that extensive work has been carried out and that the venue is ready to host the match.
As he prepares for his first FIFA World Cup as Spain’s head coach, De la Fuente admitted he is enjoying a special moment in his career. He also drew comparisons between the current squad and the team that won the 2010 World Cup under Vicente del Bosque, highlighting the group’s unity, commitment and collective spirit as key ingredients in Spain’s pursuit of another world title.
