Lionel Scaloni Blasts the World Cup Schedule Ahead of Argentina's Clash with Egypt
Lionel Scaloni delivered a strong criticism of the 2026 World Cup schedule after Argentina’s exhausting victory over Cape Verde. With several players dealing with physical issues and little recovery time, La Albiceleste now turns its attention to Egypt.
Scaloni Questions World Cup Schedule Before Egypt Showdown
Argentina secured its place in the Round of 16, but the celebration quickly gave way to concern. The 3-2 extra-time victory over Cape Verde kept the defending champions alive, yet it also highlighted the physical toll the tournament is taking on Lionel Scaloni's squad.
After surviving one of their toughest matches so far, attention shifted away from the result and toward the demanding schedule. Scaloni did not hide his frustration, openly criticizing the limited recovery time before Argentina's next knockout match.
According to the coach's post-match comments, it is difficult to understand why teams enjoyed nearly six days between matches during the group stage only to receive barely three and a half days once the knockout rounds began.
Scaloni Believes the Tournament Schedule Makes Little Sense
Following Argentina's exhausting battle against Cape Verde, the head coach questioned why the World Cup schedule becomes increasingly demanding during the most important phase of the competition.
He argued that the progression should work in the opposite direction, giving players more time to recover as the stakes rise rather than reducing the available rest.
Argentina's situation perfectly illustrates the problem. After enjoying almost a week between several group-stage matches, the defending champions now have only three and a half days to prepare for another high-intensity knockout contest.
Player Fitness Becomes Argentina's Biggest Concern
The dramatic win over Cape Verde left several Argentine players dealing with physical issues.
Facundo Medina finished the match suffering from severe cramps after an unusually demanding performance, while Enzo Fernández also battled muscle cramps during the closing stages but remained on the field because Argentina had already used all of its substitutions.
To make matters worse, Nicolás González twisted his ankle during extra time, adding another concern for the medical staff ahead of the next round.
Although none of the situations appear to involve serious injuries, the lack of recovery time leaves little margin for players to fully regain their fitness before the showdown with Egypt.
Argentina's preparation also suffered another setback when a storm forced the cancellation of a scheduled training session in Miami, further reducing the team's time to recover and prepare before traveling to Atlanta.

Scaloni Also Dismisses Claims That Argentina Receives Special Treatment
Scaloni also addressed ongoing claims suggesting that Argentina benefits from favorable treatment during the World Cup.
The coach dismissed those accusations, saying that social media often amplifies opinions that lack solid evidence and quickly turns minor incidents into major controversies.
According to Scaloni, neither he nor his players pay attention to those discussions, choosing instead to remain focused on their performances on the field.
Next comes an Egypt side full of confidence after eliminating Australia, arriving with momentum and believing it can challenge one of the tournament favorites.
