Kylian Mbappe's Goal Puts Pressure on Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and South America at FIFA World Cup 2026
The France striker remains in the race with Lionel Messi while also dealing a blow to CONMEBOL's pride.
Kylian Mbappé scored the winning goal as France edged Paraguay 1-0 on Saturday at Philadelphia Stadium to book its place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinals. The strike also tightened the race for the tournament's Golden Boot while bringing the French superstar even closer to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the World Cup record books.
Mbappé Pulls Level With Messi in the Golden Boot Race
Mbappé netted his seventh goal of the tournament, drawing level with Lionel Messi atop the FIFA World Cup 2026 Golden Boot standings.
Trailing the two leaders are Erling Haaland and Harry Kane with five goals apiece, while Ousmane Dembélé, Mikel Oyarzabal, Vinícius Júnior, and Ismaïla Sarr have each scored four times.
The decisive goal came from the penalty spot in the 69th minute after Paraguay midfielder Diego Gómez fouled Désiré Doué inside the box.
Mbappé also moved within one goal of Messi on the all-time FIFA World Cup scoring list. The France captain now has 16 World Cup goals, just behind Messi's 17.
Mbappé Becomes South America's Biggest World Cup Nemesis
With his goal against Paraguay, Mbappé strengthened his reputation as one of South America's toughest opponents on the World Cup stage.
He has now scored seven goals against CONMEBOL nations in FIFA World Cup matches:
- Five against Argentina (three in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Final and two in the 2018 Round of 16).
- One against Peru during France's title-winning campaign at Russia 2018.
- One against Paraguay in the 2026 Round of 16.
Post-Match Tension With Orlando Gill
Mbappé's rivalry with South American teams appeared to intensify after the final whistle.
The France forward was accused of celebrating qualification to the quarterfinals directly in front of Paraguay's players, particularly goalkeeper Orlando Gill, who reportedly tried to congratulate him after the match.
According to reports, Mbappé ignored the gesture.
Gill later admitted in the mixed zone that emotions got the better of him and acknowledged that he kicked the ball toward the French star in frustration.
Mbappé's Past Comments on South American Football Resurface
The latest controversy also revived Mbappé's remarks about South American football made before the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
In an interview with TNT Sports Brasil, he said:
"Argentina and Brazil don't play high-level matches on the way to the World Cup. In South America, football isn't as advanced as it is in Europe. That's why, when you look at recent World Cups, it's usually European teams that win."
Those comments drew widespread criticism across South America and resurfaced after Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, defeated France on penalties in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Final, denying Mbappé and Les Bleus a third world title.
Now, with another World Cup title within reach in North America, Mbappé once again finds himself at the center of the tournament's biggest headlines—both for his goals and for the rivalry that continues to follow him.
