Kylian Mbappé's Pointed Message to Didier Deschamps After France's World Cup Elimination
France's captain did not hide his frustration after the semifinal loss to Spain and openly questioned key tactical decisions that shaped Les Bleus' exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Mbappé couldn't hide his disappointment
France's hopes of reaching a third consecutive FIFA World Cup Final came to an end with a 2-0 defeat to Spain in the semifinals.
Speaking to M6 after the match, Kylian Mbappé delivered a brutally honest assessment of Les Bleus' performance, admitting the team never managed to execute the game plan needed to reach another final.
"There are no words to describe how disappointed we are," Mbappé said.
Beyond expressing his frustration, the France captain also questioned several tactical aspects of his team's approach, comments that quickly sparked debate in France.
"We should have gone man-to-man"
Mbappé suggested France needed a far more aggressive strategy to disrupt Spain's rhythm.
"I think we should have gone man-to-man against Spain. We needed to force them to run with us," he said.
The Real Madrid forward believed France allowed Rodri and Fabián Ruiz far too much time on the ball, enabling Spain to dictate possession throughout the match.
"Fabián and Rodri had too much time to play. We lacked communication in our pressing."
His remarks were widely interpreted as a clear message toward head coach Didier Deschamps, as they directly questioned France's tactical setup against La Roja.

France never imposed its game plan
Mbappé admitted the problems extended beyond tactics alone.
According to the French captain, Les Bleus struggled technically and failed to take advantage whenever they recovered possession in advanced areas.
"We didn't play the match we wanted. Tactically and technically, we weren't at the level required for a World Cup semifinal."
He also praised Spain for remaining faithful to its footballing identity from start to finish.
"Spain stayed true to its game plan. They love controlling possession and the tempo. Our objective was to press them high, but we couldn't do it."
Technical mistakes proved costly
Mbappé pointed to France's lack of quality in key attacking moments as another major reason behind the defeat.
"Even when we won the ball high up the pitch, our first touches weren't good enough for a World Cup semifinal."
For the striker, tactical shortcomings, technical errors and poor communication combined to prevent France from ever taking control of the match.
"We didn't know how to hurt them when we needed to. It was up to us to change the balance of the game, and we failed."
A major setback for Deschamps' project
The defeat ended France's bid to reach a third straight World Cup Final after winning the tournament in 2018 and finishing runners-up in 2022.
Mbappé admitted reaching another final had been one of the squad's biggest ambitions.
"Playing in the final was our dream. It was an opportunity for our country to keep dreaming and making history."
France will now shift its focus to the third-place match, while the debate surrounding Deschamps' tactical decisions is likely to intensify.
Mbappé wants France to learn from the defeat
Despite his frustration, the French captain closed with a message focused on resilience.
"We'll have to recover, take some time off and move forward. Football waits for no one."
Mbappé insisted France must learn from the disappointment before beginning the next chapter.
"We have to learn from this defeat and start again."
His comments, however, have already ignited one of the biggest debates in France: was Les Bleus' downfall caused by poor execution on the pitch—or by the tactical plan designed from the bench?
