Kylian Mbappé Blasts Paraguay After France's Win: "We Also Know How to Play Dirty"
Kylian Mbappé, Rayan Cherki, and William Saliba criticized Paraguay's approach after France's victory. Their comments on the officiating and the physical nature of the match have fueled fresh World Cup controversy.
Mbappé Sounds Off After Beating Paraguay
France's place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals came with plenty of controversy. After edging Paraguay 1-0, Kylian Mbappé made it clear he was frustrated with the way the match unfolded, delivering comments that quickly became one of the tournament's biggest talking points.
After the match, the French captain believed Gustavo Alfaro's side turned the match into a physical battle filled with fouls, constant interruptions, and provocation. What stood out most to Mbappé was that, despite Paraguay's aggressive approach, the referee did not show a single yellow card to the South American side.
According to the players' comments after the final whistle, France expected a very different kind of challenge than the possession-based matches they often play. However, the tension reached another level when Mbappé insisted that France is fully capable of competing under those same conditions.
"We also know how to play dirty football," was the message that summed up the striker's feelings as he made it clear that France was ready to respond to whatever style their opponents chose to bring.
Officiating Becomes the Center of France's Complaints
Mbappé was not the only French player to express his frustration. Rayan Cherki also questioned the officiating, focusing on the number of fouls that, in his opinion, went unpunished throughout the match.
The attacking midfielder admitted he could not understand how Paraguay managed to commit so many fouls without receiving a single booking, something he believed heavily influenced the flow of the game.
While France finished the match with three yellow cards, Paraguay ended the contest without any, despite French players pointing to incidents involving elbows, hard tackles, simulation, and even a stamp on Mbappé's shin.
Defender William Saliba echoed those concerns. Although he stopped short of directly blaming the referee, he admitted that a few yellow cards could have helped keep the physical battle under control much earlier.
France Shows It Can Win More Than Just Beautiful Matches
Mbappé explained that many people view France as a team capable of winning only through attacking flair, but insisted this match proved they can succeed in a completely different way.
The Real Madrid forward suggested that many expected France to arrive "wearing tuxedos," focused solely on entertaining football, when in reality the squad is equally prepared for demanding physical battles.
That sentiment was reinforced by Cherki, who revealed that the coaching staff had spent several days preparing the players for Paraguay's style of play and ensuring they were mentally ready for such an encounter.

Morocco Awaits as the Debate Continues
With Paraguay eliminated, France now shifts its focus to a quarterfinal showdown against Morocco, one of the biggest surprise packages of the tournament.
Although the French players praised the African side's quality, they emphasized that recovery will be the priority after the physically demanding battle against Paraguay.
Still, the Round of 16 clash is likely to remain a major topic of discussion. The comments made by Mbappé, Cherki, and Saliba have reignited the debate over physical football, refereeing standards, and how far teams should go to disrupt technically gifted opponents.
