Julian Nagelsmann Leaves the German National Team After the Failure in the 2026 FIFA World Cup
The coach stepped aside after the harsh blow against Paraguay and thanked the players and fans in a public letter.
Nagelsmann resigned
Julian Nagelsmann decided to step aside and submitted his resignation as coach of Germany, closing a brief but intense cycle at the helm of the four-time world champion. The news comes just days after the elimination against Paraguay in the penalty shootout, an unexpected outcome that left the team directionless in the World Cup.
At first, he wouldn't leave
The coach had declared after the defeat that he was not "one to run away," but internal pressure and the atmosphere within the German Football Association (DFB) ultimately tipped the scales. On Thursday, in a meeting lasting almost three hours in Frankfurt, the leaders listened to his explanations about the failure, although they were not convinced. There, it was suggested to him that a voluntary departure was the best option, and Nagelsmann agreed.

Nagelsmann's letter
In a public letter, the coach expressed the pain of the decision: "I have done a lot of reflection since our elimination and have consulted with trusted people. My priority has always been the success of the team. After such a bitter disappointment, they deserve the opportunity for a fresh start." He also thanked the players, coaching staff, and fans: "They supported us, trusted us, gave us energy, even in difficult moments. It truly hurts me to have disappointed you and not being able to give you more memorable football nights in this World Cup."
