Julian Alvarez Wakes Up and Argentina Ends Switzerland’s Dream in Extra Time at the 2026 World Cup
The Albiceleste secured their place in the semifinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The defending champions will look to return to the final.
Argentina endured a tougher-than-expected battle against Switzerland but found an unlikely hero in Julian Alvarez to secure a place in the semifinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. A goal from the forward in the 110th minute of extra time and a late strike from Lautaro Martínez allowed the Albiceleste to overcome a difficult challenge and defeat La Nati 3-1 after extra time.
SUFFERING, DRAMA, AND CONTROVERSY
Led by Lionel Scaloni, Argentina entered the match looking to take control from the opening whistle and quickly found the breakthrough. Just minutes into the game, Alexis Mac Allister headed home a Lionel Messi corner kick to put the defending champions ahead.
However, instead of taking full control, Argentina allowed Switzerland to grow into the match. The European side enjoyed more possession and, while it did not create many clear-cut chances, it managed to frustrate an Argentine team that struggled to find the finishing touch needed to put the tie away.
Switzerland responded in the second half. Dan Ndoye leveled the score in the 66th minute, reigniting Swiss hopes and giving his team confidence to push higher up the pitch. Shortly after, one of the match’s most controversial moments arrived: a VAR review overturned an initial refereeing decision and resulted in Breel Embolo’s dismissal, leaving Switzerland down to 10 men for the final stretch.
With the numerical advantage, Argentina pushed for the winner but repeatedly ran into Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, who made several key saves to keep his team alive and force extra time.
JULIAN ALVAREZ DELIVERS WHEN IT MATTERS MOST
With the tension rising and penalties appearing increasingly likely, Julián Álvarez stepped up. The Atlético de Madrid forward, backed by Scaloni despite criticism during the tournament, delivered when Argentina needed him most with a spectacular long-range finish that finally broke the deadlock.
The goal released the pressure from Argentina, which had struggled for much of the match but continued searching for the breakthrough. In the final moments of extra time, Lautaro Martínez took advantage of the open spaces and scored the insurance goal to complete the victory.
The reigning world champions now face a massive challenge: a semifinal showdown against England. A matchup filled with history, rivalry, and expectations, as Argentina looks to continue its pursuit of another World Cup final appearance.
