Julián Quiñones played a key role in Mexico's winning start at the FIFA World Cup 2026, but the forward was quick to point out an area where El Tri still needs to improve.
The striker scored the opening goal in Mexico's 2-0 victory over South Africa, helping Javier Aguirre's side begin the tournament with three points. However, after the match, Quiñones admitted there is still work to do.
Pressing must improve
Speaking after the victory, Quiñones highlighted Mexico's pressing as the main aspect that needs attention.
"We have to press our opponents more. It's something we're going to work on because we can't allow teams that much freedom," he said.
The forward believes improving that part of the game will be crucial as the competition progresses and the level of opposition increases.

Happy with the win, but aiming for more
Quiñones also praised the support Mexico received from fans before the tournament opener and expressed satisfaction with the result.
"We're happy. A few days ago the fans showed us their support, and today we repaid some of that trust, but we want more," he said.
His comments reflected the ambition inside the Mexican camp despite a successful start to the tournament.
The first goal of the World Cup
The Al Qadisiyah forward made history by scoring the first goal of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Quiñones found the net in the ninth minute when his shot slipped through the legs of South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
The goal set Mexico on its way to victory before Raúl Jiménez added a second goal later in the match.
With three points secured in Group A, Mexico now turns its attention to the next stage of the tournament, with Quiñones emphasizing that stronger pressing will be key to maintaining momentum and continuing its World Cup journey.
