Javier Aguirre Challenges England: "Mexico Needs an Almost Perfect Match"
Javier Aguirre believes Mexico has what it takes to eliminate England, but admits El Tri must deliver an almost perfect performance. The head coach explained how his team plans to contain Harry Kane and why he trusts his squad ahead of the showdown.
Javier Aguirre isn’t afraid of England and believes Mexico can pull off the upset
Javier "El Vasco" Aguirre made it clear that the Mexico National Team will not step onto the field already defeated ahead of its 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash with England. While acknowledging the European side’s quality, the veteran coach insisted El Tri has every reason to believe it can compete on equal terms if it reaches its highest level.
According to Aguirre’s remarks during his pre-match press conference, Mexico must deliver an “almost perfect match” to keep its World Cup dream alive. The challenge is enormous because England remains one of the tournament favorites and is backed by one of the strongest domestic leagues in world football.
“If I didn’t believe we could beat England, I would say so,” Aguirre stated, making it clear that confidence inside the Mexican camp is genuine. In his view, the outcome will come down to which team makes fewer mistakes under pressure.
Mexico enters the knockout stage undefeated, with four consecutive victories, eight goals scored and none conceded, numbers that continue to fuel belief that this squad is capable of making another deep World Cup run.
Aguirre’s blueprint to contain Harry Kane and England’s attacking power
One of the biggest concerns for Mexico’s coaching staff is Harry Kane, England’s captain and one of the most complete strikers in world football.
Aguirre praised the England star, highlighting not only his finishing ability but also his aerial dominance, technical quality and commitment to defending when his team loses possession.
At the same time, the Mexican manager revealed that El Tri has already prepared a collective plan designed to reduce Kane’s influence on the match.
Beyond Kane’s individual brilliance, Aguirre also emphasized how much England has evolved under Thomas Tuchel.
No excuses: Aguirre says the match will be decided on the field
While England’s camp has discussed factors such as altitude and local conditions, Javier Aguirre dismissed those conversations as distractions.
The Mexican coach insisted that major matches are won through football, not external circumstances.
For Aguirre, the equation is simple: eleven Mexicans against eleven English players, with the responsibility of taking chances in attack while maintaining the defensive discipline that has defined Mexico’s campaign.
He even revealed that one of the most significant cultural changes within the group has been encouraging stronger interaction among players, including removing cell phones during team meals so everyone remains engaged with one another.
Mexico looks to write another historic chapter at the World Cup
The meeting with England represents far more than a place in the Quarterfinals. It also offers this generation of Mexican players an opportunity to earn a place among the country’s most memorable World Cup teams.
As Javier Aguirre pointed out, Mexico previously reached the quarterfinal stage only when it hosted the tournament in 1970 and 1986, although both editions featured fewer participating nations and a different competition format.
Even so, Aguirre has avoided making historical comparisons, choosing instead to focus entirely on the match ahead.
