Ivory Coast have reappointed Herve Renard as their head coach after exiting this year's World Cup in the round of 32.

The Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) neglected to give Emerse Fae – who led them to Africa Cup of Nations glory in 2024 after taking over mid-tournament – a new contract when his deal expired on July 31.

Fae had also led Ivory Coast into the knockout stages of this year's World Cup, though they were beaten 2-1 by Norway after qualifying from Group E in second place, only behind Germany on goal difference.

Now, they have turned to Renard for a second time, 11 years after winning the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations under the Frenchman.

Renard won nine of his 18 matches in charge of Ivory Coast between 2014 and 2015, drawing five and losing four, before leaving in the wake of a penalty shoot-out victory over Ghana in the AFCON final.   

At this year's World Cup, Renard took charge of Tunisia when Sabri Lamouchi was sacked in response to a 5-1 loss to Sweden on matchday one, but he oversaw two more defeats against Japan (0-4) and the Netherlands (1-3) as they finished rock bottom of Group F.

Renard's first task will be to ensure Ivory Coast reach next year's AFCON, having been drawn alongside Ghana in a tricky qualification group.
