Hugo Broos Bids Farewell After South Africa's Historic Campaign in the FIFA World Cup 2026
The Belgian coach confirmed his definitive retirement after the elimination against Canada, closing a cycle that took Bafana Bafana to their first qualification.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 in the United States, Mexico, and Canada continues to cause shifts in the coaching positions. This time it was Hugo Broos, the historic 74-year-old Belgian coach, who confirmed that he is definitively retiring from coaching after South Africa's elimination in the round of 16 against Canada.
A historic cycle for South Africa
Broos marked a turning point in South African football. Under his leadership, Bafana Bafana returned to the World Cup after 16 years and reached the knockout stage for the first time in their history. Canada's 1-0 victory ended the dream, but it did not erase the impact of a process that also included two participations in the Africa Cup of Nations and a third place in the 2023 edition.
The final decision
Although before the tournament he had hinted that he would retire, after the defeat he left the possibility of continuing open. However, the South African federation itself was already looking for a successor, and the coach ended up confirming that he would not continue in the position. "Will I continue as coach? No, it's irreversible," he declared to the Belgian media outlet voetbalnieuws.be. Broos clarified that he could collaborate in another role, such as scouting or advising, but ruled out being fully involved in football: "Football will no longer be a part of my life 24 hours a day."

A legacy and a personal closure
Broos, who managed clubs like Anderlecht, Genk, and Club Brugge, in addition to winning the African Cup with Cameroon in 2017, bids farewell with a legacy of professionalism and unprecedented results for South Africa. In a relaxed tone, he even joked about his personal life: "My wife is happy that I'm retiring, but she already warned me: 'Don't bother me at home!'
The coach will return to South Africa at the end of July for an official farewell and to evaluate whether he will accept an advisory role. Thus, another coach steps down from the world stage, leaving behind an extensive career and an unforgettable chapter for African football.
