Joachim Klement’s Model Has Suffered Its First Major Setback

Joachim Klement entered the 2026 FIFA World Cup with an outstanding reputation. The German economist became well known for correctly predicting the champions of the 2014, 2018, and 2022 FIFA World Cups, using a mathematical model based on variables such as population, wealth, climate, football culture, and the FIFA rankings.

Before the tournament began, he published a complete knockout-stage simulation and predicted the Netherlands would win the World Cup by defeating Portugal in the final. However, one of his boldest predictions has already been proven wrong.

Brazil Ruined One of His Predictions

In his simulation, Klement predicted that Japan would eliminate Brazil in the Round of 32, one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.

Reality turned out differently. Carlo Ancelotti’s side came from behind to defeat Japan 2-1, securing a place in the Round of 16 and invalidating one of the predictions that had generated the most attention ahead of the knockout stage.

The result marks the first major mistake for a model that had earned widespread recognition for its accuracy over the past three World Cups.

Neymar wasted no time reacting to the German economist’s failed prediction.

On his X account, the Brazilian star posted a short message directed at Klement:

"Mr. Joachim Klement... please try again at the next World Cup."

The post quickly went viral among Brazilian fans, who celebrated not only their team's qualification but also the fact that the Seleção had disproved one of the tournament’s most talked-about predictions.

Although Brazil has already shattered part of Klement’s forecast, much of his projected bracket is still intact.
