Harry Maguire Left Out of England’s 2026 World Cup Squad
Defender Harry Maguire confirmed through his social media accounts that he will not be part of the England national team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Head coach Thomas Tuchel personally informed him that he would not be included among the 26 players traveling to North America, a decision that surprised many English fans.
Maguire admitted he felt “shocked and devastated” after learning he had been left out of the squad. Although the official Three Lions roster will be announced tomorrow, the center back chose to share the news publicly ahead of time, making clear the emotional blow of missing out on a World Cup.
Tuchel Opts for a New-Look Defense
The defender was called up for England’s last two friendlies against Uruguay and Japan. He started and played the full 90 minutes against La Celeste, while he came off the bench in the second half versus Japan. However, his performances reportedly did not fully convince Tuchel, who is expected to favor a more dynamic back line with greater long-term potential.
With Manchester United, Maguire did not have a poor season. Despite dealing with some physical issues, he finished the campaign as a starter in the defense of the team that secured qualification for the UEFA Champions League after a strong finish in the Premier League. Nevertheless, the competition within the England squad proved too intense and ultimately worked against him.
According to reports from talkSPORT, Tuchel will rely on Levi Colwill of Chelsea to fill that role. The starting center backs are expected to be Ezri Konsa and Marc Guéhi, both of whom enjoyed impressive seasons. In addition, Konsa offers versatility by also being capable of playing at right back, something the German manager considers crucial for his tactical system.

Could This Be the End of Maguire’s England Era?
This absence could mark the end of Maguire’s time with England. The defender is currently 33 years old and would be 37 by the time the 2030 World Cup arrives, an age at which it becomes difficult to remain at the highest level for a national team already undergoing a significant generational transition.
Maguire made his debut for England in 2017 during the qualifiers for Russia 2018. Since then, he has played 66 matches and scored seven goals for the Three Lions, while also playing a key role in the squad that reached the semifinals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship final against Italy.
Tuchel’s decision confirms that England is prioritizing a major squad rebuild ahead of the World Cup. Journalist Fabrizio Romano also reported that players such as Phil Foden and Luke Shaw are expected to miss out on the final roster, showing that the German coach is prioritizing current form and tactical balance over reputation and past achievements.
