Good News for the United States: FIFA Suspends the Enforcement of Folarin Balogun's Suspension
United States received a major boost ahead of its 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal against Belgium. The FIFA Disciplinary Committee confirmed that Folarin Balogun will be eligible to play after suspending the enforcement of the sanction he received following his red card in the Round of 16.
The Suspension Exists, but It Will Not Be Enforced for Now
During the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Balogun was shown a straight red card following a challenge on Tarik Muharemović. The incident initially resulted in the automatic one-match suspension that accompanies a direct dismissal.
However, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee issued a different ruling. The United States forward was officially handed a one-match suspension for breaches of Articles 14 and 66 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, but the enforcement of that suspension has been suspended.
According to FIFA's official statement, the suspension has been placed under a one-year probationary period, in accordance with Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
What Does the Probationary Suspension Mean?
The ruling does not overturn the punishment; instead, it postpones its enforcement. As a result, Folarin Balogun will be available to face Belgium and continue playing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
However, if the American striker commits another infringement of a similar nature and severity within the next year, the suspended one-match ban will be activated and enforced, in addition to any new disciplinary sanction imposed for the subsequent offense.
The decision comes as a significant boost for head coach Mauricio Pochettino, who will have his leading striker available for one of the most important matches of the tournament.
Balogun has been one of United States' standout performers, scoring three goals in the competition—a brace against Paraguay during the group stage and another goal against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 16. His movement, ability to exploit space, and clinical finishing have made him the focal point of the American attack.
With FIFA's decision, United States heads into the quarterfinal against Belgium with its attacking firepower intact in what promises to be one of the most compelling matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
