German Football Association Advances Talks with Jürgen Klopp to Replace Julian Nagelsmann
The German Football Association (DFB) has taken a significant step in its search for a new national team head coach. On Saturday, the federation confirmed in an official statement that it has concluded the first round of negotiations with Jürgen Klopp, the leading candidate to take over Germany following the team's elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The meeting took place in New York, where Klopp is currently working as Global Head of Soccer for the Red Bull Group while also serving as a television analyst during the World Cup.
According to the statement released by the DFB, president Bernd Neuendorf and vice president Hans-Joachim Watzke held a "constructive" meeting with the German coach.
"During this constructive meeting, an understanding was reached regarding the fundamental points of a potential contract."
Negotiations will continue next week, and both parties remain optimistic about reaching a final agreement, although Klopp's contractual situation with the Red Bull Group must still be resolved.
Klopp, the Man Chosen to Rebuild Germany
The departure of Julian Nagelsmann has left a major vacancy within the national team. Germany's elimination against Paraguay in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup represented another disappointing chapter for a nation still trying to reclaim its place among football's elite.
Since winning the World Cup in Brazil 2014, Germany has endured a difficult period on the world's biggest stage. It was eliminated in the group stage at both Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022, and although the team showed signs of improvement in this tournament, it once again fell short after losing to a disciplined Paraguay side coached by Gustavo Alfaro.
For that reason, officials within the DFB believe Jürgen Klopp is the ideal coach to begin a new era.
His international reputation, his proven ability to develop young players, and his highly successful football philosophy built around high pressing, intensity, and quick transitions make him the natural choice to restore Germany to the top of world football.
A Coach Built to Win
Klopp's résumé fully supports his candidacy.
With Borussia Dortmund, he ended Bayern Munich's domestic dominance by winning back-to-back Bundesliga titles and leading the club to the UEFA Champions League final in 2013.
He later transformed Liverpool into one of Europe's strongest teams, winning the UEFA Champions League in 2019 and delivering the club's first Premier League title of the modern era in 2020. He also lifted the FA Cup, the Carabao Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup.
Throughout his managerial career, Klopp has consistently built teams with a strong collective identity and relentless intensity—qualities that Germany hopes to recover on the international stage.

A Decision That Excites German Fans
During the World Cup, Klopp sparked controversy after suggesting that Nagelsmann's tenure with the national team could be nearing its end. He later apologized for those remarks, but that did little to change the opinion of many German supporters, who have long viewed him as the ideal candidate to lead Die Mannschaft.
Now, negotiations are progressing positively, and optimism continues to grow within the German Football Association.
If discussions with the Red Bull Group are successfully concluded, Jürgen Klopp could soon become the man tasked with restoring Germany to the place it has historically occupied: among the true giants of world football.
