George Weah's brutal jab at Lamine Yamal: "He's nowhere near Mbappé... everyone knows it"
George Weah makes his stance clear
Comparisons between Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé continue to spark debate during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but for George Weah, there is no argument. The only African footballer to have won the Ballon d'Or stated that the French forward is at a much higher level than the young Spanish star.
During an interview, Weah emphasized that the two players are at very different stages of their careers and said it is unfair to compare them under the same standards.

"Everyone knows Mbappé is above him"
The former Liberian striker was emphatic while explaining his point of view.
"Lamine Yamal is still a very young boy. It is wrong to compare him to Mbappé. Kylian is already an established phenomenon, while Lamine is only beginning to find his path. I wish him all the best, but everyone knows Mbappé is currently at a much higher level."
For Weah, the main difference lies in experience and everything the France captain has already achieved with both his national team and at club level.
Mbappé continues to back up Weah's words
The former player's comments come as Mbappé is enjoying an outstanding 2026 World Cup, ranking among the tournament's top scorers and leading France through the knockout stage. His performances have reinforced the belief that he remains one of the most influential footballers in the world.
Meanwhile, Lamine Yamal, at just 18 years old, continues to establish himself as one of world football's brightest young talents and a key player for Spain. However, Weah believes he still needs time to reach the level the French forward is displaying today.
A potential World Cup showdown
The debate could ultimately be settled on the pitch if Spain and France advance to the semifinals of the 2026 World Cup. A meeting between Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé would pit two different generations against each other and provide another opportunity to compare two of the biggest stars in world football.
