Gavi Says He Is In The Best Moment Of His Career And Dreams Of Playing At The 2026 World Cup With Spain
After an injury that kept him away from football for months, Gavi believes he has returned stronger than ever and now has his eyes set on the 2026 World Cup.
Gavi overcame the toughest injury of his career
The season began surrounded by uncertainty for Gavi. The FC Barcelona midfielder spent months away from the pitch after suffering a serious knee injury while playing for Spain, a devastating setback that abruptly interrupted the best moment of his young career.
The Barcelona academy graduate suffered a complete ACL tear along with meniscus damage during a European Championship qualifier in November 2023. The recovery process lasted for much of the season and forced him to spend months working away from the spotlight.
However, after finishing the campaign in outstanding form with Barcelona, Gavi now feels he has fully returned to his best level and has one major objective in mind: playing for Spain at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“I feel better than ever”
In an extensive interview with Mundo Deportivo, Gavi openly discussed both the physical and emotional side of recovering from the most difficult period of his career.
“I’m better than ever. I feel better than ever,” the Spanish midfielder said, making it clear that he once again feels ready to compete at the highest level.
The player also admitted how difficult the recovery process truly was. “The season has been very complicated because of the injury, but I came back and the recovery was really tough,” he confessed during the interview.
Despite the early doubts about how long it would take him to regain his competitive rhythm, Gavi eventually became one of Hansi Flick’s most important players during the final stretch of the season.
The 2026 World Cup is now his biggest target
Beyond simply returning to full fitness, Gavi’s main objective now is to establish himself once again within Luis de la Fuente’s Spain squad and arrive at the World Cup in peak condition.
“I feel more prepared than ever and hopefully I can go to the World Cup,” Gavi said when asked about his chances of making Spain’s final squad for the tournament.
The midfielder also believes he proved himself during the most important matches of the season, something that could strengthen his case ahead of Spain’s final roster decisions.
“This last month I’ve more than delivered. I’ve been at a magnificent level for my club,” the Barcelona midfielder stated confidently.
Hansi Flick and Luis de la Fuente were crucial during his comeback
During the interview, Gavi also had special words for Hansi Flick and Spain manager Luis de la Fuente, both of whom played major roles during his recovery.
Speaking about Flick, Gavi revealed that the German coach never stopped believing in him, even during the most difficult moments of the rehabilitation process. “He has always trusted me blindly,” the Barcelona star explained.
Meanwhile, Luis de la Fuente also remained close throughout the recovery. According to Gavi, the Spain coach was extremely happy when he finally returned to the pitch after suffering a second muscular setback during his comeback process.
Now, with the World Cup approaching and the hardest chapter of his career finally behind him, Gavi once again feels ready to become one of the leading faces of Spain’s future generation.
