France Beats Paraguay as Mbappé Continues to Build His World Cup Legend
France lived up to its role as favorite and defeated Paraguay 1-0 in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, in a tight, physical match defined by La Albirroja’s tremendous defensive resistance. The South American side competed with order, sacrifice, and intensity, but ultimately paid the price for its lack of attacking threat.
From the start, France controlled possession and forced Paraguay to sit very deep near its own box. The Paraguayan side focused on closing spaces, defending with two compact lines, and waiting for a chance on the counterattack. For long stretches, the plan worked, as Les Bleus dominated the ball but struggled to find clear paths toward goal.
A Paraguayan Wall That Held Until the Penalty
Paraguay’s defense was the main story for much of the match. Every time a French player managed to win an individual duel, another La Albirroja defender stepped in to close the gap. Gustavo Gómez, Omar Alderete, and Orlando Gill kept the team alive with important interventions and strong concentration.
However, the defensive effort finally broke in the 66th minute, when France was awarded a penalty after a foul on Doué inside the box. One minute later, Kylian Mbappé stepped up, converted with confidence, and scored the 1-0 goal that ultimately decided the match.

Mbappé Ties Messi in the Scoring Race
The goal carried huge weight not only for the scoreline, but also for Mbappé’s individual legacy. With that strike, the France captain reached seven goals in this World Cup, tying Lionel Messi at the top of the tournament’s scoring race.
In addition, Mbappé reached 19 goals in World Cup history, leaving him just one behind Messi’s 20 career World Cup goals. At 27 years old, the French forward continues to build a historic career on soccer’s biggest stage and is already among the greatest World Cup scorers of all time.
France Now Turns Its Focus to Morocco
In the final minutes, Paraguay tried to push its lines forward, but remained toothless in attack. Its first shot on target did not arrive until the 89th minute, far too late to truly trouble Mike Maignan. At the other end, Mbappé nearly extended the lead, but Gill denied him with a pair of excellent saves.
With this win, France advances to the quarterfinals, where it will face Morocco in a rematch of the Qatar 2022 semifinal. Paraguay exits the tournament with an admirable defensive performance, but with an attacking debt that ultimately ended its World Cup dream.
