FIFA World Cup 2026 Posts Highest Goals-Per-Game Average in Nearly 60 Years
The 2026 FIFA World Cup continues to make history with an average of 2.94 goals per match, the highest since Mexico 1970. With 83 matches played and 244 goals scored, the tournament is already shaping up to be one of the most attacking and entertaining World Cups of all time.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup continues to rewrite the record books both on and off the pitch. In addition to being the first edition to feature 48 national teams, the tournament has also become one of the most entertaining in history thanks to its remarkable scoring rate, producing the highest goals-per-game average since the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico.
After 83 matches, the tournament has produced 244 goals, resulting in an average of 2.94 goals per game. It is the highest scoring rate in nearly six decades, when the Mexico 1970 World Cup finished with an average of 2.97 goals per match. The impressive numbers reflect the attacking style displayed by many of the participating nations throughout the competition.
A World Cup That Keeps Breaking Records
The group stage already hinted at what was to come. A total of 215 goals were scored across the first 72 matches, averaging 2.98 goals per game. Rather than slowing down once the knockout rounds began, the attacking momentum has continued, further establishing this tournament as one of the most entertaining World Cups ever played.
With 244 goals in 83 matches, the 2026 World Cup has already surpassed the total number of goals scored at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, which ended with 172 goals. While the expanded 48-team format naturally increased the number of matches, the goals-per-game average confirms that the quality of attacking football has remained exceptionally high.
One of the tournament's most memorable scorelines came when Germany defeated Curaçao 7-1, producing the highest-scoring match of the competition so far.
Attacking Teams Continue to Set the Pace
On the offensive side, France remains the tournament's highest-scoring team with 13 goals, followed by Germany and the Netherlands, which each scored 11 before being eliminated.
Not every group produced the same level of attacking football. The section featuring Spain, Uruguay, Cape Verde, and Saudi Arabia proved to be the most defensive during the group stage, recording the fewest goals among all groups.
Although the all-time World Cup record of 5.38 goals per match, set at Switzerland 1954, remains untouched, the 2026 edition has already secured its place among the most attack-minded tournaments in football history. With several knockout matches still to be played, this World Cup is expected to continue adding to its impressive numbers and further cement its legacy as one of the most exciting editions ever held.
