Fede Valverde Takes Responsibility After Uruguay's World Cup Failure
Federico Valverde took full responsibility for Uruguay's disappointing FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign after the team's group-stage exit. The captain vowed to keep fighting for La Celeste despite calling the tournament a personal failure.
Federico Valverde has broken his silence following Uruguay's early exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, accepting full responsibility for the team's disappointing campaign. The captain of La Celeste shared an emotional message on social media, acknowledging that he fell short of expectations while reaffirming his commitment to representing his country in the future.
The Real Madrid midfielder admitted that Uruguay failed to meet its objectives after finishing third in Group H with just two points. Draws against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde, followed by a narrow defeat to Spain, ended the South American side's World Cup journey before the knockout stage.
Valverde Accepts the Weight of the Elimination
In his statement, Valverde said representing Uruguay is one of the greatest honors of his career and confessed that he had done everything possible to prepare for the tournament. He explained that he worked tirelessly throughout the season, both physically and mentally, hoping to avoid another painful group-stage elimination after the disappointment experienced at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Despite those efforts, the midfielder admitted they were not enough. He accepted full responsibility for the team's failure and acknowledged that his performances did not reach the level he expected from himself. Even so, Valverde made it clear that stepping away from the national team is not an option and promised to continue fighting for La Celeste.
A New Chapter Begins for Uruguay
Valverde's comments came only days after Marcelo Bielsa stepped down as head coach of Uruguay, bringing an end to a short-lived spell that concluded with the team's disappointing World Cup exit.
During his farewell press conference, Bielsa dismissed any rumors of tension with Valverde, instead praising the midfielder for his professionalism, commitment, and tactical versatility. The Argentine coach even stated that he had rarely shown as much trust in any player as he had in Valverde, believing the midfielder had earned that confidence through his performances and dedication.
With Bielsa's departure and the captain's honest self-criticism, Uruguay now faces a period of rebuilding as it looks to regain its place among the world's elite national teams. For Federico Valverde, however, the mission remains unchanged: to continue wearing the national team jersey with pride and help return La Celeste to the top of international football.
