Fabián Ruiz and Gavi, World Champions Honored With Tomatoes in Andalusia
Los Palacios y Villafranca celebrated their two sons with a unique tradition, giving them their weight in tomatoes after winning the World Cup with Spain
A tradition that was born in 2010
The tribute began more than a decade ago, when Jesús Navas, also from this Andalusian town, was part of the historic team that lifted the trophy in South Africa. Since then, every footballer from the town who achieves World Cup glory is honored with the fruit that symbolizes the agricultural identity of the region.
Weighing and tribute at the town hall
On Tuesday, Ruiz and Gavi were welcomed at the town hall with a large event. There, the traditional weighing took place, with the PSG midfielder weighing in at 84 kilos while the young Barcelona player registered 68 kilos. The figure is not insignificant; each one received exactly that amount of tomatoes, as a show of pride and gratitude from their people.
Football and roots
The combination of fertile land and sporting talent has become a hallmark of Andalusia, where Gavi and Ruiz are from. The welcome party for the players not only celebrated a world title but also the union of two icons, football and agriculture.
