England Struggles and Raises Questions After Draw with Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup
Despite the stalemate, both sides remain in contention for top spot in Group L heading into the final round of the group stage.
England and Ghana played out a 0-0 draw on Tuesday at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the Three Lions enduring a frustrating afternoon that raised fresh questions about Thomas Tuchel's side, while the Black Stars showcased resilience and discipline to earn a memorable result at Boston Stadium.
A TIGHTLY CONTESTED AFFAIR
Despite the efforts of Declan Rice, England produced a first half to forget. For the first time in the tournament, the opening 45 minutes passed without a single shot on target from either side. The match was marked by tension, frequent fouls, offside calls, and a lack of attacking rhythm.
Much of England's frustration stemmed from Ghana's defensive organization, with Iñaki Williams playing a key role in limiting the influence of Harry Kane. The England captain was unable to add to his World Cup tally, missing the opportunity to move beyond the 10 goals he shares with Gary Lineker and losing ground in the race for the tournament's Golden Boot.
Needing a result, England emerged with greater urgency after the break and began to create opportunities through Noni Madueke, Kane, Anthony Gordon and others. However, Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare proved indispensable, producing several important saves to keep the score level.
A DRAMATIC FINISH
The best chances arrived in the closing stages after Bukayo Saka was introduced from the bench.
In the 87th minute, Saka forced an excellent save from Asare before Nico O'Reilly struck the crossbar with a header from the rebound. Moments later, Kane squandered England's golden opportunity, blazing over the bar from close range with the goalkeeper beaten. The winning goal seemed destined to come, only for the Three Lions to be left wondering how they had failed to score.
England's frustration continued deep into stoppage time. In the 93rd minute, Marc Guéhi powered a header toward goal, but substitute Kojo Peprah Oppong came to Ghana's rescue with a superb goal-line clearance just minutes after entering the match.
It was Jude Bellingham's 50th appearance for the Three Lions, and although he was named Player of the Match, it was ultimately a night to forget for the midfielder, who struggled to make an impact and delivered a disappointing performance.
The result leaves both teams unbeaten after two matches, but the mood around each side could not be more different. England faces criticism after what many will view as one of its least convincing performances in recent years, while Ghana heads into its decisive clash with Croatia knowing qualification — and potentially top spot in the group — remains firmly within its grasp.
