England Knows How to Suffer and Returns to the Semifinals: Is It Coming Home?
England once again proved that advancing in a FIFA World Cup is not always about playing beautiful football: sometimes, it is also about knowing how to suffer. The Three Lions defeated Norway 2-1 after extra time in a dramatic match in Miami and returned to the World Cup semifinals for the first time since Russia 2018.
The standout performer was Jude Bellingham, who scored both English goals. The midfielder stepped up when his team needed him most, first equalizing before halftime and later capitalizing on a rebound from Ørjan Nyland during extra time.
Norway Made the Three Lions Suffer
The match began with England dominating possession but struggling to find spaces against Norway’s disciplined defensive structure. The Vikings waited patiently and struck in the 35th minute, when Andreas Schjelderup unleashed a powerful shot that beat Jordan Pickford.
The goal changed the flow of the match. Norway became increasingly comfortable in transition and came close to extending its lead, particularly through the attacking presence of Alexander Sørloth and Erling Braut Haaland.
However, just when it seemed the Norwegians would take the lead into halftime, Bellingham appeared. The English midfielder produced a brilliant individual move and finished across Nyland to make it 1-1.
During the second half, the team coached by Thomas Tuchel was forced to suffer. Kristoffer Ajer hit the crossbar with a header, while VAR ruled out a goal from Torbjørn Heggem because of an earlier foul by Haaland. England held firm, defended with discipline and managed to force extra time..
Bellingham Steps Up Again
Once again, the difference was made by Jude Bellingham. In the 93rd minute, Nyland spilled a rebound inside the penalty area, and the English midfielder reacted quicker than anyone else to tap the ball home and complete his brace.
Norway refused to surrender. Patrick Berg and Oscar Bobb searched for the equalizer, while Nyland prevented a third English goal with a double save against Djed Spence and Bukayo Saka. However, the team coached by Ståle Solbakken could not find the goal it needed.
England is once again among the four best teams in the world. The Three Lions did not dominate every phase of the match, but they survived, responded to adversity and found the hero they needed in Bellingham.
The Three Lions will now face the winner of Argentina vs. Switzerland. The question is once again echoing through the stands and across the streets of England: Is It Coming Home?
