"There are a lot of things to reflect on and to figure out how to move forward, and whether it's time for me to step aside," the 33-year-old goalkeeper wrote on Instagram alongside photos from MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where Ferran Torres' decisive goal secured Spain's second FIFA World Cup title.

"I dreamed of winning it again. I dreamed of bringing the trophy back to Argentina and making history one more time. The truth is, this pain is hard to put into words," Martínez said after making 11 saves during Sunday's final.

The Aston Villa goalkeeper, who was seen in tears on the pitch after the final whistle, added: "I'm truly sorry. I gave everything I had to help my country and my teammates."

Veteran defender Nicolás Otamendi, who announced before the tournament that the 2026 FIFA World Cup would be his final appearance for Argentina, paid tribute to his teammates on social media.

"You are my safe place when football brings me its greatest joys and its greatest heartbreaks," Otamendi wrote.

Left-back Nicolás Tagliafico, who impressed throughout the tournament and played the final despite an apparent injury to his left leg, shared his emotions on Instagram.

"It hurts so much, I won't deny it. But reaching another World Cup final and leaving everything on the pitch is something no one can take away from us."

Midfielder Leandro Paredes, who was sent off after the final whistle following an altercation with several Spain players, posted a brief message: "Thank you, Argentina. I love you today and always."

Atlético Madrid winger Nicolás González also reflected on the defeat.

"Does it hurt? Of course it does, more than words can explain. Every Argentine feels this pain, but we're used to fighting through it. That's what makes us different, and why the world watches us."

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian 'Cuti' Romero apologized to Argentina supporters.
