Ecuador Declares a Holiday After Defeating Germany and Advancing to the Round of 32 in the World Cup
Ecuador declared a national holiday after the historic 2-1 victory over Germany in New Jersey
National holiday in Ecuador
Ecuador's victory over Germany in the 2026 World Cup not only marked a key step toward the Round of 32 but also became a national event. President Daniel Noboa declared this Friday a national holiday, a decision that reflects the magnitude of the joy the team brought to its people.
Statement from the Ecuadorian President
The measure was announced on the official X account of the head of state and confirmed thru an executive decree. "Thanks to the players and the coach who, despite the criticism, the insults, and the tough times they went through, managed to recover and bring this immense joy to the entire country. Tomorrow, a celebration!" wrote Noboa in a message that quickly went viral. The official document establishes the suspension of the workday in the public and private sectors on June 26, 2026, clarifying that it will not be made up. The president is in the United States on an official visit that coincided with the match against Germany.
The effect of victory
The 2-1 victory in New Jersey was an authoritative blow from the Ecuadorian team, which arrived with doubts after the first matches of the group stage, having lost and drawn. The result not only secured qualification but also revitalized the confidence of a fanbase that saw the outlook as complicated. The decisive goal ignited euphoria in the streets of Quito, Guayaquil, and other cities, where the news of the holiday was received as a symbol of national unity.
