Didier Deschamps’ farewell ended with an unforgettable night at the 2026 World Cup
A farewell that ended unexpectedly
Les Bleus faced England in the third-place match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a contest that turned into an attacking battle filled with goals and unexpected twists.
England claimed a 6-4 victory and concluded its tournament campaign in third place, while France brought a historic era to an end with a painful defeat.
England struck from the start
The Three Lions needed only three minutes to open the scoring. Declan Rice appeared inside the penalty area and put Thomas Tuchel’s side ahead.
France failed to respond, and just 12 minutes later, Ezri Konsa doubled England’s advantage.
The biggest blow came before halftime. Bukayo Saka scored twice, in the 37th minute and first-half stoppage time, to send England into the break with a surprising 4-0 lead.
France appeared completely overwhelmed, and Deschamps’ farewell was beginning to turn into a nightmare.
France produced an unexpected comeback
Les Bleus returned to the field with a different attitude and quickly found the goal they needed.
Kylian Mbappé pulled one back in the 48th minute, and Bradley Barcola scored France’s second goal just six minutes later.
France continued to increase the pressure until Mbappé struck again in the 66th minute to make it 4-3 and restore all the excitement to the match.
In less than 20 minutes, France went from trailing by four goals to being only one goal away from an equalizer.
